「漫画」暗殺教室

Day #1

Today is the first day of new year, 1.1.2016. I closed my 2015 with another rant and annual obligatory resolution : one of which is to make a sketch of my daily observation of things and something that I can share. Today, I want to sketch either my workplace that will be left behind, my dead laptop, or just a scenery I always saw everyday out the window. But then, I decided to put them away at least for now, since this chapter of comic I’m following gives me strength to live on despite of depression I’m still in.

The Japanese comic tells a story about superbeing in a form of an octopus who would destroy the world in one year. Interestingly, this yellow bald octopus is also a teacher of “non-talented junior high students” and the entire class is assigned secretly to end this octopus’s life before their graduation. The students are trained hard and going through some sort of training, acquiring not only assassination abilities but also life lessons. In the latest chapter (without spoiler so you don’t have to worry), the superbeing octopus teacher told the disappointed students that…

In the course of your life, there will be a time that you will have to face a wave called “society”. You don’t have opportunity to produce a result you wished, solely because everyone seems to be against you. A simple example is it is like being a person who has tried his best to present something but no one even bats an eye. Left for disappointment, left without any support, forced to go with other people’s plan you don’t like, forced to be a follower. It’s pretty much like swimming against the current.

When this happens, said the octopus, you must not hope the society to change for you. It’s useless to wish for them to change, it wastes your time and energy. Swimming forcefully against them head on will not produce result, instead, you will be the one frustrated and lose everything you have. The only thing you can do is telling yourself, “Welp, that is life”. By accepting this situation, your mind will shift from all noises to a blank paper. Then, it is your duty to put some thought on how you accomplish your goal. If forcing your way head on can’t be done, there are plenty things you can do to navigate the current called society.

The superbeing continued, it’s okay to hide or escape. But as long as you’re not breaking the rules, you can always have opportunity to create an opening. A surprise comeback, a slim chance, or simply changing your thought to something else to overcome it. The wise teacher closes his speech by giving readers a wisdom: do not panic, strive for success and stay persistent. There is no doubt it’ll give best result.

Honestly when I read these sections, I didn’t continue reading to the end of chapter immediately. I read it all over again twice or thrice, smiling and nodding. Yes. This is what I will do. It gives me hope when I’m all down (and I wish this article will give you one too). It gives me a thought of doing some brainstorming on what I can do to complete my goal in spite of society’s torment. Perhaps, first, I should write a postcard to Matsui-sensei as a thank-you.

Matsui Yusei, the mangaka of this comic “Ansatsu Kyoushitsu” or translated into “Assassination Classroom”, is an amazing storyteller and professional mangaka. It stays to be my favorite manga up until now, and until it ends – it will always be.
